Text Box: The following is an account of my tour with a small group of hearty Americans to “all things Lotus” (or as much as we could get) in 3 short days in the UK.

Day 1 – Lotus Factory, Kettering Hall, Classic Team Lotus

After being picked up at the airport and driving up from London, we spent our first night in Norwich (pronounced “Norrrrrridge”, according to Richard, our tour guide). The next day we drove to Hethel which is…well, I don’t know where. As near as I could tell, we were driving in the countryside when we encounter a sign that said “Lotus Cars”. Its about 15 minutes drive from Norwich. The factory is a on a former U.S. Base and the landing strip is now part of the test track. As we pulled up, at least 3 series 1 Elises pulled up alongside along with a nice old wedge TVR. I was beginning to wonder if the Elise was the company car. Then, it turned out that these guys were visitors from Holland also taking the factory tour and then the trip to Donington the next day (same as us!).

Anyway, we hand in our cameras at the entrance and proceed to the tour start/boutique shop. Richard, our host, was also our tour guide. Apparently he has worked on and off for Group Lotus since he was 16 in the 1960’s. At that time, he decided to take an Elan out for a spin on his own even though employees were supposed to be 24 to drive a company car. Anyway, we bypass the regular tour group and Richard takes us first to the Elise assembly line. We go in the back where are perhaps several hundred Elises just finished, awaiting delivery. The lava orange color looks quite nice as does the new JPS livery version and another version with green and traditional yellow stripes. No Norfolk mustard color but there is a nice dark blue that I like.

Anyway, we then go inside and walk up to the line. Now, I don’t know
