The
peak of the British Car Season in Northern California starts with the mid-August
extravaganza in Monterey that includes Concorso Italiano, The Monterey
Historic Races, Pebble Beach and the well-attended auctions, and concludes
with British Car Day in Palo Alto. this year it fell on Sunday September
10th.
As
you drove in and were handed you badge and told where to park you were
given a bag of goodies, that included a copy of British Marque, Moss Motors
catalog and a nice plaque commemorating the event.
Three
large fields, with enough room to hold a good sized college football stadium,
filled to capacity
with
cars that, for the most part are weekend if not daily drivers. On one end
a dozen Rolls and Bentleys,
on
the side four very rare Bristols, in the middle, every imaginable MG and
Triumph variant, on the far end
dozens
of vintage and recent Jaguars, Minis, Sunbeam Tigers and more Rovers than
the English Military have !
Unusual
cars, and there were many, included Ed Adam's 1,700 lb, triple webber
equipped, re-bodied, re-suspended TR-6 sporting a shapely hand shaped aluminum
body done by the former owner Jimmy Kilroy who is a body designer/builder
for internationally famous hot-rod builder Moal.
And
for those familiar with the Lotus Marque there was Mike Ostrov's Maroon
1960 Elite. From the factory the car was powered by a light and delicate
1216 CC aluminum engine, four speed manual and all up weight of around
1,500 lbs. Mike does beautiful restorations, but does not believe in trailer
queens, and he drives his cars quite a bit. This particular car had taken
a bad hit on New Years Day several years ago and was now back.
Mike
had taken an Elan Chassis, a 1725 CC Lotus Twin Cam engine and mated it
to a Ford C4 three speed automatic. While the car a gained a fair
