December
2nd was a cloudy Sunday morning. The 35th and maybe last time
Harriet Giddings would be running the Toy Rallye to collect toys for the
underprivileged kids whose only holidays gifts often came through the
Washington
Township Volunteer Bureau.
The
usual suspects from GGLC, Triumph Travelers and an assortment of car clubs
and internet savvy Gimmick Ralleyers pulled up with a wonderful assortment
of stuffed animals, kid-version slide guitars, fire trucks, dolls and model
cars.
Yours
truly had been drafted in to man a checkpoint, and upon arrival, under
protest, was made a navigator for Oliver Baltuch and his beautiful green
livery 1986 Esprit Turbo HCI "Dubbl-Oh." Now given that my problems finding
my way out of a paper bag when tired, and with two kids up in the middle
of the night, this did not look promising......aaarrgggghhhh !!!
But
it turned out to be blast. Yes, the instructions were confusing for a pair
of first timers, small details that we did not give enough weight to, we
were gaining ever more error points with every turn. And blissfully ignorant
we were we smug as he-- as we waved and laughed as the Triumph went
down "Ingot Street," having read in the second page of special instructions
that we were NOT to go down "Ingot Street." And we did a few corners and
streets with dispatch, forwards and backwards. We were messing up and it
was a hoot.
When
we arrived at the Pizza Hut, it did not take long to learn of our perfidy.
But we still took second in class, (which was good, even though there were
only two cars in the class...)
It
was fun, it was challenging, it was a total brainteaser and it helps bring
toys to kids who otherwise might have to go without. Thank You Harriet
G., Kiyoshi H., Daren S., Scott H., Tom C., David A. and Mike O. This is
a great event and GGLC should be proud of its participation.
